Urge Congress to boost American energy independence with coal-to-liquid fuels

I am writing to urge you to support congressional action that will help accelerate the domestic production of coal-to-liquid (CTL) transportation fuels, thus helping to reduce America's growing dependence on increasingly expensive foreign oil.

America is home to the largest coal reserves in the world. Our coal reserves contain more energy than all of the oil reserves in the Middle East. It is time to put America's energy resources to work. America's coal reserves are spread throughout the nation, meaning CTL fuel production is less vulnerable to potential disruptions caused by natural disasters or terrorist attacks.

The domestic production of CTL fuels will require the creation of tens of thousands of new, high-paying jobs across the country. It is time to put Americans to work in helping meet our nation's future energy needs, rather than continuing to send hundreds of billions of dollars to unfriendly and unstable foreign governments.

CTL fuels produced in America will emit less carbon dioxide than the imported fuels they will replace and will emit dramatically less amounts of the gasses responsible for creating smog and those that impact human health. Using CTL fuels, America can achieve vitally important environmental improvement goals.

Congress can help promote the domestic production of CTL fuels by giving the Department of Defense the ability to negotiate long-term contracts that will ensure that America's Armed Forces can utilize clean, domestic and affordable coal-based transportation fuels, rather than relying on expensive oil imported from unfriendly and unstable regions.

America needs to become less dependent on foreign oil, not more dependent. By supporting the accelerated production of domestic CTL fuels, Congress can help fight rising energy prices, achieve important environmental goals and create thousands of new much needed jobs across the country.
